Film music

Cristian Lolea began scoring for movies in 2004, when director Gheorghe Preda chose him to score his feature film An Angel Hooked on Me. Since then, Cristian Lolea composes film music frequently. His musical approach varies from extremely minimalist themes (as in Breakdown) to very complex music (as in An Angel Hooked on Me – a fusion of symphonic, industrial and electronic music).

Cristian Lolea won the „Georges Delerue Award” (in 2020, for Servants), the Best Original Score award at Saint-Jean-de-Luz International Film Festival (in 2020, for Servants), Special Mention Award for best original music at the Moldavian Filmmakers Awards (in 2020, for The Soviet Garden), the Romanian Filmmakers Union Award (in 2016, for Carmen, and in 2017, for Orizont) and the Gopo Award for Best Original Music Score (in 2008, for An Angel Hooked on Me).

Something Good Out of Life
Director: Dan Piţa
Production: MediaPro Pictures
Music: Cristian Lolea
Cast: Corneliu Ulici, Dragoş Dumitru, Adelaida Perjoiu, Anastasia Dumitrescu, Adrian Găzdaru

Synopsis
Mateo and Ginel are two friends who grew up in an orphanage in Jiu Valley, one of the poorest regions in the European Union. Their dream is to go to America, but they have to do something to raise enough money. "Something Good Out of Life" is the story of friendship, love and dreams that seem dangerously frail in this cold and rough place, but, however, hope prevails as the characters try to find their place amidst the chaos of the early 90's in Romania.

Although far from their preferred option, Mateo and Ginel take jobs as miners as the first step towards their great escape. The dark corridors that greet them at first will lead them to a rollercoaster ride of surprises, decisions and actions as they try to make their way out from a life and place as claustrophobic as the mines themselves, finding and losing ideals, money and love in the process.

Escape from Heaven
Director: Stelian Tănase
Production: Filmex
Music: Cristian Lolea
Musical Theme: Dinu Olăraşu

Synopsis
Escape from Heaven is a docudrama based on real events that narrates disturbing stories about break-ups, flights, tragedies, great longings and life. The internal monologues of the characters draw a blurry map of escape from Romania’s communist hell during the rule of Dej and Ceauşescu, and their iron hand - The Security.

Escape from Romania meant regaining your freedom and your humanity. These fugitives were normal people who planned their escape a few years ahead of their actual flight. They were secretive and calm. They were winners in the eyes of the ones left behind.

Director: Adina Pintilie
Production: Filmex, Manekino Film, Cinema Studio of Romanian Ministry of Culture
Music: Cristian Lolea/ Marius Gâlea

Synopsis
During the communist dictatorship in Romania (1945-1989), thousands of people risked their lives in an attempt to run away from the country. Despair made them invent the most incredible methods to cross the border illegally. Some of them managed to escape, but many lost their lives in these attempts.

OXYGEN is inspired by such a real case - a man who tried to cross the Danube illegally using an oxygen cylinder.

The facts, however, are reinterpreted in a highly subjective vision. Blending beautifully shot fiction and strange archive footage, in visuals and sounds of haunting quality, the film depicts an emotional landscape, a man’s inner journey towards a healing hereafter.

Synopsis
Ana is a pianist and a composer. She is young, has an enviable social position, various musical projects and a great deal of drive. She lives in a big house, decorated in black and white, in a minimalist style, in a residential area.

An unknown admirer is sending her, from afar, paradoxical signs of love. These are ironic messages, unexpected presents and clever manipulations that all have one thing in common - the colour blue and a moralizing nuance.

His seduction ritual is more like a show of his power, but also of his intelligence: it suffices that Ana makes a wish and, in a short while, she gets "it".

The reality around her will be altered, and she will increasingly feel like an actor in a huge media show, whose scenario will remain unknown to the very end. The viewer is the one to imagine the motivations and intentions of the unseen character, who, just like a capricious god, orchestrates around himself a whole show, giving unpredictable and paradoxical proof of love.
